ANGER MANAGEMENT – Starfish Mediation & Anger Management Training

 

AIM

The aim of this course is to give participants the skills and knowledge they need to deal effectively with feelings of anger. A further benefit of this course is the sharing and support they receive from fellow group members. The course is designed to be non-confrontational, supportive, and educational.

 

OBJECTIVES

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. identify factors that trigger an angry response;
  2. identify cost of inappropriate outbursts of anger;
  3. identify their preferred method for resolving conflict;
  4. use the skills of Collaboration in a conflict situation
  5. use listening skills and ‘I’ messages;
  6. employ a variety of strategies for remaining calm.

 

SESSION PLAN

Session 1           Anger: friend or foe?

                       Old brain vs. new brain.  What’s happening physically in your body?

                        What triggers an angry reaction?

                        What lies below the anger?  The Iceberg Theory 

                        Quieting Response: QR

 

Session 2        Five Conflict Resolution Styles & How  to Use them.

                        What makes you angry?

                        Family of Origin Work

                        Your Buttons – Your Triggers

 

Session 3        Whose Problem is It?  The Behavior Window:

                        Active listening.  Learning to listen to hear what is being said.

                        Confronting Skills.  How to communicate what you really mean.

                        How to talk to an angry person

                        Why you choose anger

 

Session 4         Changing an Uncontrolled Anger Sequence to a Controlled Anger Sequence.

                        How thoughts affect feelings: 

                        Do you control your thoughts or do your thoughts control you?

                        Focusing on Getting Your Basic Needs Met
